About Us

National Representation
Watermelon Shade Ltd was established in June 1999 with the aim of bringing cost-effective and reassuringly high quality shade and weather protection solutions to areas initially in the South Island. The business continues to grow and due to the volume of enquiries being received it has now extended its representation into the North Island with the ultimate aim of providing a franchisee service nationwide.

Banking Background
The business was established by Mike Keys, formerly 27 years with the BNZ, where he was a senior manager. His business background gives him the ability to oversee strategy and provide franchisees with sound guidance. Mike not only recognised the business potential for offering the NZ public an affordable, high quality shade and weather protection service, he was also compelled to offer the service after realising the huge protective benefits of shade structures against harmful UV rays and the potentially deadly melanoma they cause. This passion to provide affordable protection for New Zealanders remains a driving force behind Watermelon Shade.

"Our fabrics provide up to 98% of protection from harmful UV rays which exceeds The Cancer Society's recommendations for sunshade fabric ratings. This shade protection can reduce exposure to harmful rays by 75%," says Mike, "as well as protecting property and providing a cool, sheltered and pleasant outdoor area away from the intensity of the sun."
